Passenger Rail Service could come to Pueblo in the next several years. The Southwest Chief project is gaining momentum. In late January 28, 2020 a public meeting took place in Pueblo to get input on potential station locations and other station amenities that would be included in the plan.

In November of 2016, Pueblo County voters approved Ballot Question 1A which gave approval for Pueblo County to collect revenues up to $66 million or until 2032, whichever happens sooner, to fund community improvement projects (CIP).

Included as one of the 1A CIP projects is the Southwest Chief to Pueblo project which anticipates that Amtrak’s Southwest Chief, a multi-state passenger train connecting from Chicago to Los Angeles, will travel daily roundtrip to Pueblo from La Junta.

“The station area plan is the first step in planning for any potential passenger rail service into Pueblo,” said Mike Ricottone, Pueblo County’s 1A Project Manager. “The process will help to identify potential station locations, necessary track improvements and amenities that will enhance the passenger experience.”

This is the first public meeting for the project. A second public meeting is planned for late spring 2020 followed by the completion of the final plan.
