Community clean-ups to dispose of mattresses will be held in two Pueblo County locations Saturday, October 24, 2020, in Colorado City and Pueblo. Participants are asked to remain in their vehicles, masks are required of everyone that attends the events.

Pueblo County residents are encouraged to bring their unwanted mattresses and box springs to the recycling event.

“This event works to keep mattresses and box springs out of the landfill,” said Kim Sugar, program manager at the Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment. “The mattresses will be disassembled and the foam, cotton, and felt is repurposed into items such as carpet padding. The steel is melted, and wood is sent to a chipper to be repurposed,” explained Sugar.

By recycling mattresses, it not only diverts the items from the landfill, keeps the mattress from being resold and reused.

Residents may dispose of mattresses and box springs from 8:00 – 11:00 AM at the Ace Hardware, 6850 Highway 165, Colorado City, and from 1:00 – 4:00 PM at the Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment, 101 W. 9th Street, Pueblo.

The cost to recycle is $10 per mattress and $10 per box spring, cash, and credit card only are accepted.
