Important Requirements & Deadlines

  • Grace Period: Colorado provides a one-month grace period after your tags expire. If you renew after the last day of the month following your expiration, a late fee of $25 per month (up to $100) will be charged.
  • Proof of Insurance: Your renewal notice will specify if you need to provide proof of insurance. If renewing online or at a kiosk, this is usually verified electronically.
  • Keep Colorado Wild Pass: Your renewal will include a $29 fee for a state parks pass unless you explicitly choose to opt out during the renewal process.

1. If You Bought from a Dealership

In Colorado, dealerships typically handle the title paperwork for you. Refer to Purchased Car from dealer page

  • Wait for the "Title Complete Notice": The dealer sends paperwork to the County Clerk. Once processed (usually 4–6 weeks), you will receive a postcard in the mail called a "Title Complete Notice."
  • Register Online or In-Person: Once you have that notice, you can go to myDMV.colorado.gov to register and have your plates mailed, or visit a Pueblo County Motor Vehicle office to get them immediately.
  • Temporary Tags: Your dealer-issued paper tag is valid for 60 days. If it’s about to expire and you haven't received your notice, contact the dealer for an extension or check your title status on the myDMV website.
    • Late fees start to accrue the day the temporary tag expires

2. If You Bought from a Private Party

You are responsible for the entire process and must register the vehicle within 60 days of purchase to avoid late fees.

What Will It Cost?

Colorado registration fees are some of the most complex in the U.S. because they include Specific Ownership Tax (SOT), which is based on the vehicle's original MSRP and age.

  • Sales Tax: Due at the time of registration. If you bought from a dealer, they may have already collected this.
  • Registration Fees: Expect to pay several hundred dollars for a brand-new vehicle.
  • Electric Vehicles: As of July 2025, there is a $60.05 fee for Plug-In Electric Vehicles, plus a "Road Usage Fee" (currently $12.00 for Battery Electric or $8.00 for Plug-in Hybrids).
  • Keep Colorado Wild Pass: An automatic $29 fee for a state parks pass is added unless you choose to opt out.
