GIS information encompasses practically every aspect of daily life. As more of our world is modeled with GIS, the amount of information compiled grows exponentially. Consequently, it is important that GIS data is properly organized to allow people to efficiently make use of this information.

Pueblo County's numerous GIS data layers are organized thematically, based upon guidelines from the Federal Geographic Data Committee and modified slightly to meet Pueblo County's needs.

Pueblo County's Geographic Information Systems Department offers a wide variety of services pertaining to mapping and economic gardening. 

Control, commonly referred to as Geodetic Control, includes layers that allow surveyors to accurately perform land surveys. The data in this category has been gathered through the use of survey-grade GPS.

Environmental GIS layers contain information about the plants, animals, soils and non man-made elements that exist in our landscape. Most utilized layers in this category are soils, optimal crop soil zones, conservation easements and wildlife habitat zones.

Hydrography data is devoted entirely to how water resides in and flows through Pueblo County, the hydrography category includes layers representing lakes, streams and rivers and irrigation ditches.

Imagery includes aerial photography, which is an essential component in Geographic Information Systems. Pueblo County currently possesses the following aerial imagery:

  • B&W 6-inch pixel aerial photography (acquired spring 2001) covering Pueblo, Pueblo West and the St. Charles Mesa
  • Full-color 5-meter pixel satellite imagery (acquired summer 2002) covering Pueblo County in its entirety
  • Full-color, 1-meter pixel satellite imagery (acquired January 2001) covering the Colorado City area
  • Full-color, 1-meter pixel satellite imagery (acquired spring 2002) covering Beulah, Rye and the mountainous areas in SW Pueblo County

Infrastructure layers are representative of man-made elements found throughout our communities. Included in this category are Building Footprints, Utilities, Businesses and Recreation Opportunities.

Landbase includes data that relates to land ownership and all aspects of how land in Pueblo County is taxed, managed, subdivided and sold -- such as parcel boundaries, lot boundaries, block boundaries and subdivision boundaries. Also included in landbase data layers are Official City/County/Metropolitan District Boundaries, Zoning, Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness layers, Comprehensive Planning layers, Voting Districts, and Polling Places. This government-related data represents information of particular interest to various governmental departments. It is also useful in helping individuals understand how decisions are made in our communities.

Transportation data encompasses how people and goods travel throughout our region. The most-used layers in this category are road centerlines, railroad lines, airports and bus routes.
