Colorado Clean Indoor Air Act

The Colorado Clean Indoor Air Act (CCIAA) was passed by the General Assembly in 2006 and was updated in 2019 to help prevent negative health consequences associated with secondhand smoke.

  • Vaping will not be allowed in indoor public places, including in all bars and restaurants.
  • People will have to be 25 feet from the main or front doorway when smoking or vaping unless defined differently by local law.
  • All hotel and motel rooms will be smoke and vape-free.
  • All businesses will be smoke and vape-free.
  • Common areas of assisted living facilities will be smoke and vape-free.

Smoking and vaping are permitted in…

  • In cigar bars that meet certain requirements.
  • In tobacco and vape retail shops that meet certain requirements.
  • In marijuana testing rooms that meet certain requirements.
  • In buildings that are neither homes nor public places.

Signage for permitted areas

  • At least one sign (with the smallest size measured at 4x6 inches) stating, "Smoking allowed. Persons under 21 years of age may not enter".

  • Retail license is displayed for persons entering the business to see visibly.

  • If the retailer wants to allow vaping but not other forms of smoke or vapor, have a sign that states, "Vaping allowed. Persons under 21 years of age may not enter."
