The Tenth Judicial District Attorney’s Office prosecutes persons accused of violating state criminal laws. The more serious crimes are felonies and are prosecuted in District Court. A convicted person is sentenced by the court. There are a range of sentencing possibilities: the most severe is imprisonment in the Colorado Department of Corrections; other options include a sentence to Community Corrections or supervised by probation in which the defendant must complete programs and other conditions imposed by the Court.

Less serious crimes, such as misdemeanors, petty offenses and traffic offenses, are prosecuted in County Court. The most severe sentence is to Pueblo County Jail.

Juveniles (children between ten and eighteen years of age) who violate state law are adjudicated in District Court. The legislature set up the Juvenile Justice System under the Children’s Code with the intent to protect, restore, and improve the public safety by appropriately sanctioning juveniles who violate the law. In addition, the Juvenile Justice System is designed to take into consideration the best interests of the juvenile, the victim, and the protection of the community in providing appropriate treatment to reduce the rate of recidivism and to assist the juvenile in becoming a productive member of society.

Deputy District Attorneys are assigned to deal with one of three types of cases:

  1. District Court felonies
  2. County Court misdemeanors, petty offenses, and traffic offenses
  3. District Court juvenile cases
